Association of Performers

The Kattaikkuttu Sangam is a grassroots association of professional Kattaikkuttu performers based at the Kuttu Kalai Kudam—the rural Centre for Performing Arts in the village of Punjarasantankal, in North Tamil Nadu, India.

The Sangam -

  • Promotes Kattaikkuttu as a theatre in its own right.
  • Advocates the cultural and economic rights of professional Kattaikkuttu performers.
  • Enhances the pride of rural people in their own culture.

The Sangam's activities comprise -

The Kattaikkuttu Gurukulam, a residential theatre school for rural children and young people where they receive formal education and professional training in the Kattaikkuttu theatre tradition.

Two professional Theatre Groups, which are a training-ground for the students of the Gurukulam, and the School's Junior Company catering to the performance needs of our youngest students.

The Kuttu Kalai Kudam or Centre for Performing Arts, which houses the Sangam's office, the Gurukulam and the Kattaikkuttu Companies.

The Kattaikkuttu Sangam proper governed by an Executive Board consisting of professional Kattaikkuttu performers, who are elected from among the association's members. The Sangam has been registered as a society under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act, 1975, in 1990 and this registration provides the legal framework for all activities of the organization.

Our stakeholders are -

  • Professional, adult exponents of Kattaikkuttu for whom Kattaikkuttu is a principal source of income;
  • Vulnerable, rural children and young people (5-20 years), who live and study at the Kattaikkuttu Gurukulam, as well as their extended families;
  • Audiences,primarily rural, but also urban, who are the active recipients and patrons of traditional and innovative productions of the Kattaikkuttu Gurukulam and our annual theatre festival.
