Kattaikkuttu Sangam
Transforming Culture
Transforming Lives

Membership of the Sangam is voluntary and on an individual basis. It cuts across the dividing lines separating Kattaikkuttu theatre companies, which are competitors in the same regional performance market. In early 2011 the membership of the Sangam stood at 156.

The Sangam members are active and retired rural performers and individuals who are interested in supporting Kattaikkuttu and our work. Most of them live in villages and provincial towns in the northern districts of Tamil Nadu, and the southern part, bordering Andhra Pradesh.

Artists Welfare Scheme

In addition to advocating the artistic and economic rights of professional Kattaikkuttu performers, the Sangam supports its members in their demand for better social security and social benefits, such as an appropriate pension scheme and a medical insurance covering health expenses and occupational hazards. The institution of such schemes lies within the realm of Government, which holds the monopoly of running them.

In 1996 the Sangam set up a welfare fund that provides a very modest monetary support to its members in cases of medical emergencies and death or to honour artists and teachers, and support exceptional students in their pursuit of further artistic training.
